There are strong indications that democracy is in bondage by the newly elected Chairman of Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Honourable David Odumbaku through his interference in the appointment of the leader of the Legislative Arm of the Council
The legislative is an independent arm of government that is expected to operate without the interference of the executive.
The known model for the operations, business and activities of the legislative is strictly for all the councillors to deliberate and decide among themselves (not even the clerk of the house can partake in the decisions of) who will be the leader or other principal officers.
It’s like a case of the Governor going to the House of Assembly to vote in who will become the Speaker when there is a draw.
As stipulated by law, the Executive Chairman will only issue proclamation for the inauguration of the councillors-elect in the legislative council and thereafter stay to witness their proceedings.
The Constitution further explains that in the case of a draw in votes during any plenary sessions, the clerk of the house will call for suspension of the session to allow councillors-elect meet behind closed door and if still not resolved, the session will be adjourned indefinitely for the party leadership to Wade into the matter as a way of resolving the issue on sharing of principal positions before calling for another session to implement the decision reached.
The position taken by the clerk shows his inexperience of the constitution or deliberate attempt to subvert the guiding rules of the Legislative Arm
It suffices to say that the newly elected Chairman of Ojodu LCDA Hon. Olusegun Odunmbaku has clearly shown his myopic tendencies which would not take the council to the desired destination.
It is equally a known fact that in the same house, there are many rooms to house different persons but as a father of such house, he would do everything to cause harmonious coexistence among all and not go about heinous game and unpopular means to effect a hidden agenda.
We all need to rise to save Ojodu LCDA from retrogressing.
We need the intervention of the Speaker of the Lagos State House Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa in this matter, I so submit.
